Urinary tract infections

A single urinary infection is common; when they keep coming back, the cause needs to be found and treated at the root.

Signs and symptoms

  • Burning or pain when urinating
  • Frequent, urgent need to urinate
  • Cloudy or foul-smelling urine
  • Lower abdominal pain
  • Fever or back pain (possible kidney infection)

When to see a doctor

If you have a fever, if infections recur two or more times in six months, or if you are a man with a urinary infection.

Diagnosis

Urinalysis, urine culture and, for recurrent infections, imaging to identify the cause.

Treatment

The right antibiotic based on the culture, and treatment of any underlying cause, such as stones or prostate problems.

Frequently asked questions

Can I take the antibiotic that worked last time?

It is not recommended. Self-medication promotes bacterial resistance. Ideally, a urine culture guides the right medication.
